Mitt Romney – with his 15 percent tax rate, offshore tax havens, and history of outsourcing jobs -- is a perfect fit … for Republicans in Congress. Read more.

Good jobs number released this number -- 200,000 jobs created in December, unemployment rate dips to 8.5 percent from 8.6 percent last month, and last year the economy created 1.64 million jobs overall.  These are all encouraging signs.  But we need to keep moving forward without delay.  The economy is still very fragile and too many people are still out of work. I was proud to join steelworkersand company executives at USS-POSCO plant in Pittsburg, CA yesterday to call on House GOP leaders to pass a bill to clamp downon China's manipulation of its currency, a practice that costs us jobs.  The Contra Costa Times was there.

Speaker John Boehner said yesterday that he gets along with the President but they’re not on the same wavelength.

The House of Representatives, under the control of the Tea Party Republicans, voted 238 to 186 today to pass the bill that makes it easier for companies to outsource American jobs, H.R. 2587.  Shame on them.  The fight now goes to the U.S. Senate.


 

This morning, the House is debating a Republican bill to strip away the workplace rights of America's workers, paving the way for more outsourcing of American jobs.  I am leading the opposition to this bill in Congress.  If you are interested, you can follow the debate on C-Span online, or on TV.

Congressman George Miller announced today he will be running for re-election to Congress in 2012 in what will be the 11th congressional district created by the independent redistricting commission, the district that encompasses most of Contra Costa County.

The unnecessary and contrived federal government shutdown has been averted -- this time.  But the nightmare budget fight lives on.  Brace yourself! 

 

Full details of last Friday night's budget agreement to avert the shutdown will emerge later this week, and I'll examine them closely.  Based on what we know so far, here's The Good, The Bad and The Ugly of the fight over federal spending priorities and our economy.
